Case Study
Irish Harbour Loading Platform
Sealink Cargo Ferries approached Flowtech to work on two linkspan hydraulic cylinders, which had severely corroded end caps. They were a critical part of a loading platform allowing the ferries to load and unload, irrespective of the tide, weather conditions or seasons.

Challenge
The primary challenge was the severe corrosion of the threaded end caps on the linkspan cylinder. This corrosion made disassembly and maintenance extremely difficult, threatening the cylinder’s operational lifespan and the functionality of the linkspan. The existing design made it almost impossible to remove the end caps without causing further damage.

Concept
Our expert Flowtech engineers worked on an initial concept, in collaboration with our supply partner Danfoss, that involved machining down the corroded end caps and re-engineering the design to incorporate bolted end caps instead. The result was a refurbished 9m long cylinder with a new design that offered a more secure and accessible method for future disassembly and maintenance.
Solution
We leveraged our deep technical knowledge and supplier partnerships to devise a solution that would not only resolve the issue but also ensure easier maintenance cycles in the future through an enhanced cylinder design.
Our solution was delivered as promised in collaboration with Danfoss, ensuring the highly complex removal and replacement of the redesigned cylinders was achieved on time and within budget.
Clear communication with all parties ensured a seamless process where everyone was kept up to date and informed, through regular progress reports, Gantt charts, photographs, team calls, and weekly reports. This proactive approach ensured that the client was always aware of the project’s status.

Benefits
The successful refurbishment of the hydraulic cylinders extended their operational life and ensured the continued functionality of the harbour linkspan. There was also an added benefit in that the bolted end cap design would reduce the time and effort required for maintenance, which in turn would minimise downtime and associated future costs.
The client was highly satisfied with the project and the successful outcome further strengthened the relationship between Flowtech, Danfoss, and harbour commission, paving the way for future collaborations.
